Filmed by: Tomaž Kožar Jesenice A Winning Engine We’ve raved about the power and flexibility of BMW’s twin-turbo, 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine based on our experience with it in the 3 Series coupe, and the sentiment is much the same in the convertible. The inline-six makes 300 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 300 pounds-feet of torque at a low 1400 rpm. BMW says a manual-transmission convertible can go from zero to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. Those are impressive numbers, for sure, but without a rewarding driving experience to match, they aren’t worth much. The 335i convertible doesn’t have to worry about that, though, as the engine feels strong all over the rev range without any turbo lag. The engine’s power can catch you by surprise, too; before you know it, you’ll be doing 80 without even trying. Buyers get a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with BMW’s Steptronic clutchless-manual mode. The convertible I tested had the six-speed manual, and while it is a slick-shifting transmission — it pops from gear to gear — and is paired with a forgiving, easy-engaging clutch, the shifter itself is rather tall, which discourages the kind of quick shifting a BMW-buying enthusiast is likely to engage in. The Inside The convertible cabin is nearly identical to the coupe’s, with premium materials throughout and a clean-looking appearance. The newest car to enter our family, let’s have a very warm welcome to our new 2010 BMW 323i in Platinum Bronze with a Saddle Brown interior. Pretty colour combo, I must say. The car comes standard with most of the stuff you see on the car, the only extra on the car is the V-Kool window tint. Love the car and expect to see more of it in the future!

We hear about the newfound quietness, the relaxed gait on the motorway and, of course, the parsimonious appetite for fuel. It all sounds jolly lovely, but when the school has just rung to say your daughter has fallen over and should really go to hospital, you don’t want a relaxed cruise and, frankly, you don’t give much of a stuff about fuel economy either. It actually happened this week. A nurse at the school rang to say my nine-year-old had had a “little” accident. Now in America that would mean she’d had a “little” accident but here, in understatement central, it could be anything from a damaged hairstyle to total decapitation. What I wanted for the mercy dash was a V8 the size of an office block. But when news of my daughter’s “little” accident came through I ran out of the house to be presented, and there’s no other way of putting this, with af****** diesel. Much praise has been heaped on BMW’s 3 litre oil burner. It’s been described as refined and quiet and unusually powerful. Some say it’s actually better than BMW’s petrol engines. Certainly I have no doubt that as paraffin stoves go it’s excellent, but can we be clear on something. Comparing it to anything fuelled with petrol is as stupid as comparing a typewriter to your computer. Yes, it’s more environmentally friendly. Yes, it’s cheaper to run. But you try downloading Gary Jules’s Mad World onto a Remington …

I was at my granduncle’s house today to take photos of 3 generations of 3-Series BMWs. The green E36 is my mum’s and the blue E46 and the blue E90 is my granduncle’s. Made a full vehicle tour and start-up video of the blue E46 BMW 318i. How best to explain to you what exactly the X6 is: imagine taking a BMW X5 and a 6-Series coupe and giving them a room for the night. The result in the morning would be the X6. Got it?We tested the x50i which was wonderful to drive, it’s throaty V8 twin turbo propelling you to ‘un-SUV’ speeds faster than you can imagine. Thankfully, the technology behind the chassis and all-wheel drive system allowed for cornering on par with the performance of the engine, or we would have been testing the ABS and airbags instead!
